When it comes to illustrating, I usually sketch an idea on paper first, then transform it into a digital illustration. My process also includes researching (if necessary) colour palettes, symbolism, historical and/or cultural references, and typography. I enjoy playing around with vivid colours and Urdu typography in my work, to create an aesthetic engagement with the themes and ideas I express. Overall, my work here taps into and connects with the legacies of Persianate and Islamicate cultural aesthetics. Informed by postcolonial theory and globalization studies, my illustrations highlight ongoing conceptualizations of South Asian modernism and modern South Asian art; tradition is not the opposite of modern, but instead reworked into modern formulations.
