Part humour, part commentary, this piece is a fun take on an age-old Urdu (and Punjabi/Hindi) idiom "Meri bili minu meow?/ My cat tells me to meow?". Written in Urdu script, but spoken in a Punjabi dialect, growing up, I, and I'm sure many others have heard such a phrase thrown at them by their parents on whom one is/was dependent. Such a phrase holds different meanings, but most commonly it expresses surprise, bewilderment, or the need to taunt a child or a dependent subordinate who according to the parent or authority figure, has committed an act of, or spoke out in defiance.  To counteract the implications of this idiom, this artwork centers the cat in response to it, representing the cat's self-assured confidence, as it naturally defies others by doing what it pleases. Perhaps there is much to learn from our feline friends, and metaphorically speaking, how can we embody the self-assurance and defiance of a cat when it comes to establishing our self-autonomy and voicing our opinions and thoughts? Cats are often associated with femininity, so this piece also taps into themes of gender and feminism by challenging patriarchal norms and expectations of women's obedience and subordination, as well as when and where they are free, and 'allowed' to embody or take up space.
