Seemil Chaudhry. The Birds Shall Return, 2024. Print, 8x10in. Exhibited at Atelier Next Door, November 21-22, 2024.

This artwork vividly connects themes of Pal/esti/nian liberation and global solidarity among oppressed peoples. The piece centers around the phrase in Urdu, "Parinde Wapis Ajy Ga" or "The Birds Shall Return," suggesting a resilient hope for freedom, return, and reclaiming one's homeland from depravity. The birds depicted in flight evoke a powerful sense of liberation and resistance, transcending boundaries and connecting different struggles for justice. The red background, patterned with a keffiyeh motif, is a powerful homage to Pal/esti/nian resistance, symbolizing the courage and unity of a people who have long resisted occupation. The olive branches further root the piece in Pal/esti/nian symbolism, representing peace and resilience despite adversity. Using Urdu and drawing inspiration from traditional Pakistani truck art style, this artwork brings the Pakistani perspective into dialogue with the Pal/esti/nian struggle. Using traditional South Asian design aesthetic, this piece pays homage to Pakistani heritage and underscores the notion of interconnectedness in the fight against colonial and imperial forces and the ongoing fight for self-determination against oppression and corruption. This piece intends to highlight the universal aspiration for justice and autonomy that links oppressed communities worldwide. Ultimately, it is a tribute to solidarity across borders—a visual expression of unity and hope that all those displaced or oppressed will one day return to their homelands, and live freely and joyfully.
